Fragile Environments Report- Rain Forest

A fragile environment is the surroundings around us that are easily destroyed. The fragile environment I chose is a rain forest in Sumatra. The name of this rain forest is Sumatran Montane Rain Forest. The Sumatran Montane Rain Forest runs parallel to the west coast of Sumatra. The size of theSumatran Montane Rain Forest is 28,100 square miles. That is about half the size of Michigan in the United States!

The Sumatran Montane Forest is a fragile environment because it is sensitive to changes. For instance, many people like to cut down trees. Trees help clean the pollution and poison out of the air. When trees are cut down, the poison spreads and kills other plants. Another effect is that when trees are cut down, the forest animals loose their habitats. Also there are problems with the soil. Soil was designed for the trees. Soil and trees depend on each other. When it rains, soil erodes ruining the ecology. Many endangered animals live in this rain forest such as the Sumatran rhinoceros, Sumatran tiger, and the Sumatran rabbit. There also is a rare flower that only grows in rain forest called the Rafflesia. This flower only grows a month in a year. All of these need habitat, soil and trees to survive.

The rain in the Sumatran Montane Rain Forest has to be the right amount. Slight changes will cause the ecosystem to collapse. Temperature also has an impact. The plants in the Sumatran Montane Rain Forest need the right temperature to grow. When people burn the rain forest, it causes haze and blocks the sunshine. People have a big impact as well. People cause lots of damage to the rain forest. They cut down trees to sell burn large sections for farming and build houses. This ends up destroying the environment.

Our Field Trip to Gunung Pancar

On Tuesday, May 13, 2008, grade five went to Gunung Pancar nearby our school. We went there to learn about fragile environments. First we took the school bus until we reached the front of Gunung Pancar, for the rest of the road was too small for the bus to fit in. So, we walked the rest of the way.

We walked and walked until it passed a hour and a half! We were all so tired, yet we still had a little more to walk. When we finally arrived, most of us couldn't wait to go into the fresh water from the waterfall! We jumped right in with our PE clothes on. Even though the water was very cold, it felt so good. Our body temperature cooled down right away. All of us were told to bring change beforehand, so it was alright to swim with our PE clothes.

After we were done swimming, we all had lunch near the waterfall in a little shelter. The food felt so yummy in our tummy because we were so tired and hungry after the long walk and swimming. Once we finished eating, we interviewed the guides who helped us get to the waterfall. Their names were Pak Elbas, Pak Hendra, and Pak Oding.

Pak Oding  has been working in Gunung Pancar for 12 years, and Pak Hendra has been working in Gunung Pancar for 10 years. Pak Oding's job is to clean the waterfall area, while Pak Elbas and Pak Hendra work as farmers. From this interview I learned that the waterfall we saw hasn't changed since the first time they saw it.

This waterfall never gets dirty. The interesting part is that when it rains, the rocks don't get chipped off. The width of the waterfall is 5m, while the length is 150m, and the depth is 2,5 m. We heard rumors that the local government wants to make the area around the waterfall into a parking lot. I hope this is not true, because the nature there is breathtaking. A parking lot will take away part of the nature and ruin the scenery.

A long time ago, this place used to be a big forest, where there used to be 100 eagles, and many other animals such as monkeys and wild pigs. But then, many people cut the trees down to make houses. After the trees were cut down, the animals lost their habitat and couldn't survive. Now we only could see one eagle! Also, since the are not too many trees like it used to before, the mountain cannot contain the water too much anymore when it rains, causing the water to flood the city much lower than this area, like Jakarta.

We took another path to get back to the bus. This path was less steep, but it took us longer. We took a few stops to rest and then we had to walk again. We were relieved when we saw to bus. When we got in the bus, we all hurried to get a seat.

While we were seated, my class mate Jesslyn told me that the bus ran out of fuel so they had to buy some fuel first. When the fuel tank was full, we started heading back for school. Then another problem happened.... the air conditioner didn't work! It was broken! After walking a long way and feeling very hot, we didn't even have any air conditioner. So all in a hurry, we all opened as many windows as we could. Even though the windows were open, it was still hot because the windows in the bus were so small and not all the windows could open. We all had to bear it as we went back to school. When we arrived back at school, we all took a rest since we all were tired.

Even though the trips to the waterfall and back were tiring, we all had so much fun and learned a lot about nature. It made me appreciate more about God's creation.

United Nations (UN) Speech

Today our country, Eden Land is asking that you vote us into the United Nations. We care for the world and we want to make it a better place. Eden Land also should be in the United Nations because we take care of the environment. We want people to have good food, clean water and nice clothes. Another important thing, we believe, is that proper shelter should be provided for everyone no matter if they are rich or poor.

It is very crucial that children get good education. Without education, the next generation won’t be able to get good jobs which will lead to increased poverty. Therefore, we will make a free school for the people who don’t have enough money for their children’s education. Poverty is a big problem causing people all over the world to not have anything to eat or drink. We need to get rid of poverty through education. Eden Land also wants to promote gender equality because everyone should be treated equally. Life should not be unfair to others.

Eden Land wants to help cure the sick. We need to make sure that pregnant women are safe. It is important that people stay healthy because if they get a really bad sickness, they could die. If everyone dies because of sicknesses, then there will be no one left in this world. To avoid bad sicknesses, Eden Land will make sure that cheap medicine is available to those who need it.

Eden Land wants to make global partnerships with other countries so there will be peace in this world. We hope that there will be no more wars between two or more countries. By having more global partnerships, the world will be a better and safer place for people to live in.

My Country, Eden Land

In this post, I will explain some information about my country, Eden Land. I will explain about my country's flag, emblem, currency, motto, and my country's national anthem.

My country's flag:
My country's flag is colored light blue. It has two wavy lines at the top and bottom of the flag and is colored in a darker blue. In the middle of the flag, there is a sun. Below the wavy lines, there are leaves in the corners. In the middle of the leaves, there are two flowers. Here are the meanings of the parts of the flags:
  • The light blue represents the clear blue sky
  • The wavy dark blue lines represent the clean water
  • The sun represents positiveness
  • The circle shape of the sun represents that we are one
  • The leaves represent the nature
  • The flowers represent the beauty
My Country's Emblem:
My country's emblem is a very simple emblem. It has a picture of a cross, and a falcon. It has the country's motto at the top of the cross. It also has leaves around the whole emblem. Here are the meaning of the pictures:
  • The cross represents faith and God
  • The falcon represents protection
  • The leaves represent the nature
My Country's Motto:
My country's motto is "Put your faith in God."  This is my country's motto because I expect everyone in my country to always trust and put their faith in God.

My Country's Currency:
My country's currency has two types. Coins and paper money.

Paper Money:
My paper money is called Edeez. 1 Edeez is the same as $3. So basically, you just multiply it by 3.

Coins:
My coins are called Edaaz. 1 Edaaz is the same with 3 cents. So you also multiply it by 3.

My Country's National Anthem:
My country's national anthem is quite short. I made it short so that it would be easy to remember. The words of my national anthem are:
Our beautiful land we love you so
Green fields rolling across the island
Towering volcanoes show the majesty
Of our glorious home Eden Land

From age to age your shores provide
Protection offered to the weak
And freedom will provided too
For all of those who seek

My Holiday

Do you know where I went for my holiday? Do you know where I stayed? Do you know what I did? Well, I will answer these questions for you in this story.

On my holiday, I went to Bali. Bali is small, but popular island in Indonesia. I stayed in a hotel called “Hard Rock Hotel Bali.” We stayed there for three nights.

In Hard Rock, I could not sleep very well. I could not sleep well because my sister’s leg was always on top of me, and she was too heavy to move. One night, I could not take it anymore, so I went to my mom’s bed. A few minutes later, my mom realized that I had a fever.

I swam every day, except the day that I got sick. The day I got sick was not very boring. It was not very boring because I learned how to cross-stitch. The first cross-stitch that I made had the words, “Sew Special” and at the bottom, it had a picture of a button.

In Bali, I also went to the water park. My favorite ride in the water park was called, “The Macaroni Tube.” I like it because we went through a tunnel and we got splashed at the front of the tunnel and at the end of the tunnel. This ride is even more fun when you go down backwards and close your eyes.

In Bali, I met some students from SPH Sentul. I met Alto, Randy, Kenny, Mike, Gea, and Dea. Randy is in my sister’s class. Alto, my sister and I went to the water park together.

Our flight back to Jakarta was at 7 pm. But it was rescheduled until 9 pm. No one had told us until we got to the airport. So we found a lounge and ate chicken nuggets from McDonalds. While waiting we read books. When it was time to board, we found seats for all of us to sit together on the plane “Air Asia.”

When we got home, we all were really tired. Even though we were tired, we all still had fun. It felt good to be back home. Now I can rest well without my sister’s leg on me at night. I really enjoyed Bali.

My Reflection about my Digital Portfolios

In grade five, we made three digital portfolios. The first one that we made was this blog. We started making blogs since August. At first, I thought that making a blog would be very hard, but it turned out quite easier than expected. In making a blog, I learned how to express ourselves on the Internet.

The second digital portfolio that we made was the google pages. We made the google pages with google page maker. The google pages was also easy to make. The thing that made the google pages hard was the navigation because it was not automatic. In making this google pages, I learned how to put a navigation.

The last digital portfolio that we made was in Iweb. This digital portfolio was for our parents to see. In this digital portfolio I was tired of always making reflections. The good thing out of that was that I knew how to write good reflections. The thing that I like about the Iweb is that the navigation is automatic.

Out of all of these digital portfolios, making the blog was the easiest because I didn't have to worry about the navigation. The second easiest to make was the Iweb because the navigation was automatic. The google pages was the hardest to make because the navigation was not automatic. Even though all of these digital portfolio has different values, I still like all of them.

The Great Billy Cart Race Day

On Thursday the 6th of March 2008, we had a billy cart race. We had it in front of Hansen's house. We were all excited about the great billy cart race. The great billy cart race started from 10:00 in the morning until 12:30 in the afternoon.

The great billy cart race wasn't the only race that we had during the day. We also had a race called the most beautiful billy cart competition. That competition was about who had the most creative design. In that competition, other people voted on the most beautiful billy cart. This competition started before we left for Hansen's house.

When we got to Hansen's house, we got out a big score board so that we could see who was in the lead. Many people fell off which made it hard to watch someone get hurt. Shila fell off two times and she got scared to go the last time but her mother wanted her to go. So she did.

The last race we had was the adults race. That race was for our parents and other adults to race on our billy carts. It was also very exciting. We were all wondering who would be the winner for this race. The participants of this race was Ibu Sanny (Hansen's mother), Shila's father and Pak Andre ( our photographer).

At our next chapel, the winners of the race will get their medals. The great billy cart race winners were: Andrew who won first place, Shila who won second place, and Marchell who was third, and the last place. Shila's timing was 0.01 seconds then from Andrew. The winners of the most beautiful billy cart was Ristia in first place, Desiree in second race, and Shila in third place. In the adults race, the first place was Ibu Sanny, second place was Pak Andre, and third place was Shila's father. So, basically Shila's family got three medals!!!

Where I will be in ten years and so on....

In ten years time, I will be in university in America. I want to go to the same university that my dad went to which is called Marquette. I also want to stay at a dorm so I won't be late. I want to learn how to become a scientist and a composer or an opera singer.

I am interested in becoming a scientist because I want to explore more about space. I also want to try to find something different than others. I am also interested in becoming a composer because I enjoy music and I want others to enjoy the music that I make.

My plan to make it happen is to study hard and to pay close attention to little things. Pak Rinto can help me become a composer because he know a lot about music. My teachers at school can be a big help to me because there is so much I need to learn about science.

In twenty years, I will be an opera singer performing concerts around Asia and America. If I still have the time, I would like to also become a scientist.

What I learned from the Ancient Greece Presentation

In the Ancient Greece Presentation, I learned how to write my name using the Greek alphabet. I learned that the Greek Alphabet can look like shapes or like our alphabet, but changed a little bit. It was hard to look at the alphabet because it was small.
The second thing that I learned was about the Greek gods. I learned that Zeus was the most powerful god. I also learned that Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty. The Greek gods were very interesting to learn about.

The third thing that I learned was about the Greek sports. The girls' sport was juggling. They had to juggle as many balls as possible. Boys played hockey instead.

The third thing that I learned was about Greek numerals. I learned how to write how many numbers were in my name: AMANDA
1 2 3 4 5 6 =

The fourth thing that I learned was about Greek food. They ate bread, honey cakes and much more. They drank water like we did.

The last thing that I learned was about coins. The Greeks put a picture of a Pegasus the front of the coin. They put the Pegasus image on a hammer. When they smashed the metal with the hammer to form the coin, it left the Pegasus image on the coin. Soon they started using the Roman coins.

What I learned from the Ancient Egypt Presentation

In the presentation, I learned about haow to wrap a mummy in the process. Here are a few of the steps that I remembered:

  • put wine on the body
  • cut open the left side
  • remove the intestines, lungs, and liver
  • scoop out the brain from the nostrils
  • they put good smelling perfume
  • wash it in the river Nile
  • put oil
  • let it dry for forty days
  • put in the first coffin
  • then in the second coffin
  • put it in the tomb

The second thing I learned was what they use to tell the time. They used a water cup. The way it worked was they waited for the water in the cup to rise up. When the cup was full, it meant that one hour had passed.

The third thing I learned was about what they ate and drank. They normally drank from the nile river. They also would gather wheat that grew near the river Nile. They would make soup or bread with the wheat.

The fourth thing that I learned was about their clothing. Men normally wore cloth from their waist down to their knees. The women wore cloth all the way down to their ankles.

The last thing that I learned was about how to write my name in Hyroglyphics. I learned that the characters looked like little pictures.

Charlie Chapter Summaries

Chapter 7:

Charlie’s Birthday:

Charlie entered the room and his family shouted, “Happy Birthday” to him. Charlie was surprised. For his birthday present he got a WONKA'S WHIPPLE-SCRUMPTIOUS FUDGEMALLOW DELIGHT from Grandpa Joe. Charlie and Grandpa Joe really wanted a golden ticket. The whole family knew that they both wanted it. So, everyone paid close attention when Charlie started to open the chocolate wrapper. Apparently, Charlie faked it and said that he had it. Everyone was sad. Charlie wanted to give them part of his chocolate but no one would accept even a little bit of it.

Chapter 17:

Augustus Gloop goes up the pipe :

When Mr. Wonka was surprised to see Augustus Gloop who was scooping out the chocolate from the chocolate river with his hands! Mr. Wonka corrected Augustus not to touch the chocolate by hands, but he didn’t listen. When Augustus reached the river too far, he fell in! His mother cried out that he couldn’t swim yet. Every one tried to get him out, but it was too late. He went up through the pipe, which led to Pipe Room. Mr. Wonka called the Oompa Loompa to bring Mrs., Gloop to the Fudge Room to find her son.

Charlie Bucket Description

Charlie is a boy who is incredibly skinny! It makes him look similar to a skeleton. All they get to eat was bread and margarine for breakfast, boiled potatoes and cabbage for lunch, and cabbage soup for dinner every single day. Sunday was a special day to every one in the family because they could all have second helpings. Whenever his parents give him their share of food, Charlie wouldn't accept it because they need food too. Charlie's family is very poor.

Everyday on the way to school, Charlie passes the great chocolate factory owned by a man named Mr. Willy Wonka. Charlie really adores Willy Wonka's Chocolate. Not only does Willy Wonka make chocolate, he can make bubble gum that would last it's taste for a long time, ice cream that would never melt, and sugar balloons that can be blown up to huge sizes before they would pop.He would stop by and smell the scent of the wonderful chocolate that was being made. Charlie really wants to find a golden ticket in one of Wonka's Chocolate bars.

His birthday was a really special day because he would get one chocolate bar. That was the only chocolate bar that he would get in a whole year! Since it was very special, he only took one tiny nibble each day.
